The College of American Pathologists (CAP) Outstanding Communicator Award, established in 1991, honors William L. Kuehn, PhD, and recognizes outstanding communication contributions strengthening the image of pathology.
La’Tonzia L. Adams, MD, MS, FCAP
The College of American Pathologists presents La’Tonzia L. Adams, MD, MS, FCAP, with the 2023 CAP Outstanding Communicator Award in recognition of her contributions in reaching people through the specialty of pathology.
Dr. Adams has impacted the CAP and patient education in many ways. In 2022, she participated in a CAP video featured on yourpathologist.org, where she shared her father's painful journey with kidney disease. In the video, Dr. Adams explains to patients the importance of laboratories adapting a non-raced-based eGFR equation when testing for kidney function. Her video received a total of 3.4 million impressions and 30,000 views. The video was also featured in the CAP22 media briefing during a discussion on the new eGFR equation.
Dr. Adams is also a CAP spokesperson featured in STAT, Radio Health Journal, Portland’s KGW-NBC Channel 8, Healthier Together segment, and American Medical News. She has become an excellent resource for the CAP media relations team, especially for media inquiries related to clinical pathology and infectious disease.
Since 2022, Dr. Adams has been a member of the CAP’s Professional and Community Engagement Committee. As an active member, she has been generous with her time, quickly volunteering to review materials and provide subject matter expertise. Dr. Adams is enthusiastic, influential, and dedicated to strengthening the image of pathology.
Dr. Adams is a pathologist and medical director at the Veterans Affairs Portland Health Care System in Oregon.
