- 2023 CAP Laboratory Improvement Programs Service Award
In 2006, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) established the Laboratory Improvement Programs Service Award to recognize an individual serving within the ranks of the Council on Scientific Affairs (CSA) who has demonstrated exceptional service.
M. Elizabeth H. Hammond, MD, FCAP
The College of American Pathologists honors M. Elizabeth H. Hammond, MD, FCAP, with the CAP Laboratory Improvement Programs Service Award for her long-standing contributions to patient care and years of service to the CAP as a member of numerous committees, councils, and the Board of Governors.
Dr. Hammond has advanced the CAP in many ways. One of her most impactful contributions to the organization and pathology was initiating and co-chairing the first joint evidence-based guideline between the CAP and American Society of Clinical Ontology on HER2 testing in breast cancer. This was significant not only in establishing guidelines and performance standards for HER2 breast cancer testing but also for its impact on patient care. This success led the CAP to form a committee of the Board focused on development of evidence-based guidelines: the Center Guideline Committee. Dr. Hammond was the first chair of this committee, established in 2010, and remained a committee member through 2019.
Dr. Hammond’s knowledge and passion for practical patient care issues is evident through discussions she has had with members. Her insights, experience, and wisdom during CSA discussions, particularly on proficiency testing for predictive markers or low HER2 expression, has left a meaningful impact on members. She is well respected by members and an asset to the CAP.
Dr. Hammond is a professor emeritus of pathology at Health University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
