The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program Service Award honors the memory and works of Major General Joseph M. Blumberg and recognizes a member of the College of American Pathologists who has contributed exceptional and outstanding service to the CAP's Laboratory Accreditation Program.
William J. Castellani, MD, FCAP
The College of American Pathologists presents William J. Castellani, MD, FCAP, with the 2017 CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program (LAP) Service Award for his outstanding contributions and extensive service to the CAP's seminal and premier accreditation program.
Dr. Castellani has served on many committees throughout his years at the CAP, including the Standards and Instrumentation Resource Committee, Informatics Committee/Diagnostics Intelligence and Health Information Committee, CAP 15189 Committee, Standards Committee, and the Checklists Committee. Dr. Castellani has also served as an inspector for LAP since 1983 and as deputy interregional commissioner, beginning in 1992, after which he assumed the interregional commissioner role in 2000.
He is currently a member of the Council on Accreditation, an advisor to the Standards Committee, and a CAP liaison/US expert to the International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee (ISO TC212) Work Group 1.
Dr. Castellani is an adjunct professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Penn State Hershey College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He recently retired as a professor of pathology at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
